schoolpic1At Odyssey Montessori you won’t find high stakes tests and stressful learning situations. What you will find is respect for the students’ individual personalities and needs, individualized instruction, and hands-on learning opportunities. Our school’s academic program is based on the principle of freedom within limits. Our Montessori guides determine, through observation of the students, when new activities and materials need to be introduced. Lessons are given individually or in small groups, with the aim of encouraging active, self-directed learning. Students have to opportunity to work at their own pace with materials they have chosen, either alone or with others. Experienced students share what they have learned with younger children, while reinforcing their own learning. Students work toward gaining independence and taking responsibility for the learning process. While Montessori education focuses on individual choice, students have tasks they are expected to accomplish and goals they work to achieve, according to their individual learning needs. In our classes, the overall goal is to help children become lifelong learners and happy, productive adults. We promote active learning by encouraging spontaneous activity in education and the pursuit of studies in all areas of personal interest; by using concrete manipulative materials, experimental discovery, small- and large-group discussion, independent research, field investigation, and other methods of experiential learning; and by facilitating the children’s need to work from the concrete to the abstract.
